When starting to lose weight, one of the things people often recommend is detoxing.


Detoxing is a way of cleaning the body of toxins and bad things.


Without getting into scientific terminologies we could refer to anything that is capable of causing a disease on contact, or that is being absorbed by body tissues, or simply anything that is poisonous to our biological functioning, as toxins.

In relation to this matter our body also produces a lot of waste material which can be termed as toxins. Fortunately our body gets rid of these toxins as a normal function.

Detox bodySo a detox diet is a dietary plan that involves the elimination of certain items of our food and drink, for the purpose of assisting the body to cleanse itself of toxins. Detoxing is believed to improve health, resistance to diseases, energy levels, and helps in natural weight loss.

However many dieticians and doctors regard detoxing as no more effective as drinking a glass of water, and such regard it as a fad.

According to detox diets most of your food intake should be restricted to fruits, vegetables and water; it also involves cutting out caffeine, alcohol and smoking. There are many advocates of these detox diets. Detoxing involves sticking to a natural diet for a 7 days period (and no more).

The following detox plan share the basic tenets of detox but is safer, more flexible and hence sensible and will ensure sufficient nutrients to the body and still aiding to lose weight.

Your food choices may vary from:

Fruits: Apples, bananas, oranges, pears, etc. – fresh, frozen or dried, or canned in natural fruit juice;
Fruit juice: Homemade fresh fruit juice or smoothies – not sweetened;
Vegetables: Almost any vegetable such as carrots, cabbage, turnip, peppers, onions, sweet corns, broccoli, salad, etc. – fresh or frozen;
Beans and lentils: Any beans such as haricot, black eye, red kidney, red lentils, green lentils, etc. – fresh, dried or canned in water;
Potatoes – all types – boiled or baked;
Brown rice and rice noodles;
Fresh fish: Any fresh fish cod, salmon, trout, tuna, lobster, prawns, etc;
Unsalted nuts: Brazil, cashew, hazel nuts, peanuts, almonds, pecans, macadamia, walnuts, etc;
Live natural yogurt;
Garlic, ginger and fresh herbs;
Water: Tap or mineral water at least 2 liters a day;
Herbal or fruit teas;

The following should be avoided:

Chicken, turkey, red meat, and meat products like burgers, sausages, etc;
Milk and milk products like cheese, cream and butter;
Bread and other products that contain wheat;
Salted snacks, salted nuts;
Sweets, jam, chocolate, sugar;
Coffee, tea;
Fizzy drinks and squashes;
Processed foods, sauces salad dressings, pickles, mayonnaise;

The suggested detox diet is easy to follow, and will allow enjoyable meals without violating the requirements of detoxing.
